James Bruce “Jimmy” Dunn was born the fourth oldest of eleven children. He is the son of James Jesse “Jim” Dunn of Newport, TN. and Marian Hall Dunn of Newport, TN. He was born in Cocke County, Tennessee in the lower English Creek area on July 20, 1947. He has been married twenty years to Rhonda Karene Dunn of Dickson County, Tennessee, and she is a registered nurse in the Labor and Delivery Department at Baptist Hospital of Cocke County. He is the proud father of two children, Bruce, and Lauren Dunn. Bruce is a full-time student at East Tennessee State University and Lauren is a senior at Cocke County High School. He has a daughter-in-law, Miranda Hartsell Dunn, and she is employed at Northport School. He is an active member of Grace Baptist Church on Edwina Rd., in Newport, TN. pastored by Reverend Steve Downard. Educational background: he received his public education in various schools in Cocke County and graduated from Cocke County High School in 1965 with honors. He is a graduate of Walters State Community College where he received his Associate of Science Degree in Law Enforcement in 1976. He was a member of Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society. He is a graduate of East Tennessee State University and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Services in 1978. He was a member of Pi Gamma Mu National Honor Society. He furthered his education toward his Masters Degree in Education at East Tennessee State University. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, Quantico,Virginia and graduated in December 1980. He is a 1986 graduate of the Nashville School of Law and earned his Juris Doctorate in 1986. Prior to becoming elected District Attorney General in August 2006, he was an Assistant District Attorney General for sixteen years with the vast majority of it being spent in Cocke County, Tennessee. He was in private practice for three years in Nashville, Tennessee where he practiced criminal law, domestic relations, and personal injury. Prior to practicing law, he was a police instructor at the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy in Donelson, Tennessee where he worked full-time while attending night law school. He was a State Trooper for the Tennessee Highway Patrol for ten years before teaching at the Law Enforcement Training Academy. He was employed at Newport Industrial Products (formerly known as Firestone) in Newport, Tennessee from 1968 to 1972. He began sweeping floors and moving equipment and was promoted to a shift supervisor when he left Firestone. He received his first experience in the workforce where he was hired at the tender age of nine by our beloved Milo Hurst of Newport; he worked cutting cabbage, driving a tractor, and hauling dirt and sand. He is a veteran of the United States Army and served as a Military Policeman in Germany and California from 1966-68. He received an honorable discharge upon completion of his enlistment. He is a recent past president of the Boys and Girls Club of Newport, TN. He is also a distinguished past president of the Kiwanis Club of Newport, TN. He currently serves on the Literacy Council for Cocke County, and is immediate past president of the Cocke County Bar Association. His hobbies include bottle hunting, and he has a vast collection of bottles ranging from old milk bottles to inkwells. He is an avid reader and also enjoys walking and baseball. He was recently elected District Attorney General for the Fourth Judicial District serving Cocke, Sevier, Grainger, and Jefferson County. He was sworn in on September 1, 2006 as District Attorney General at the Cocke County Courthouse.
